Organize

Organize your information so that your readers can understand it, and so they can’t not misunderstand it.

You know your content, but your readers are seeing it for the first time. Will it make sense to them?

Make an outline. Use a Roman numeral to state the main idea. Use letters to add details and support. Each new idea gets its own paragraph and Roman numeral.

If you are telling a story, try organizing the events in chronological order first. You can reorganize them later.

Compare each part of your outline with your focus statement. Does each piece relate to the focus? IWhat’s the most logical order for your reader to understand.

If word count matters, plan 100 to 125 words per Roman numeral on your outline. To write 600 to 900 words, create 5 to 8 outlines. If you find you have 10 outlines, plan on writing 1200 to 1500 words. If that's too many words, cut content and combine ideas. This is much easier at the outline stage. Planning now reduces writing time later.
